The following is a simple example of upgrading the Contoso forest from Windows Server 2012 R2 to Windows Server 2016.<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Join the new Windows Server 2016 to your forest. Restart when prompted.<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Sign in to the new Windows Server 2016 with a domain admin account.<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. In\u00a0Server Manager<\/strong>, under\u00a0Add Roles and Features<\/strong>, install\u00a0Active Directory Domain Services<\/strong>\u00a0on the new Windows Server 2016. This will automatically run adprep on the 2012 R2 forest and domain.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n
  4. In\u00a0Server Manager<\/strong>, click the yellow triangle, and from the drop-down click\u00a0Promote the server to a domain controller<\/strong>.\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n
  5. On the\u00a0Deployment Configuration<\/strong>\u00a0screen, select\u00a0Add a domain controller to an existing forest<\/strong>\u00a0and click next.\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n
  6. On the\u00a0Domain Controller options<\/strong>\u00a0screen, enter the\u00a0Directory Services Restore Mode (DSRM)<\/strong>\u00a0password and click next.<\/span><\/li>\n
  7. For the remainder of the screens click\u00a0Next<\/strong>.<\/span><\/li>\n
  8. On the\u00a0Prerequisite Check<\/strong>\u00a0screen, click\u00a0install<\/strong>. Once the restart has completed you can sign back in.<\/span><\/li>\n
  9. On the Windows Server 2012 R2 server, in\u00a0Server Manager<\/strong>, under tools, select\u00a0Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell<\/strong>.\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n
  10. In the PowerShell windows use the Move-ADDirectoryServerOperationMasterRole to move the FSMO roles. You can type the name of each -OperationMasterRole or use numbers to specify the roles.<\/span>\n

Verify the roles have been moved by going to the Windows Server 2016 server, in\u00a0Server Manager<\/strong>, under\u00a0tools<\/strong>, select\u00a0Active Directory Module for Windows PowerShell<\/strong>. Use the\u00a0Get-ADDomain<\/code>\u00a0and\u00a0Get-ADForest<\/code>\u00a0cmdlets to view the FSMO role holders.\"\"\"\"<\/span><\/li>\n
  12. Demote and remove the Windows Server 2012 R2 domain controller.<\/span><\/li>\n
